TRADITIONAL ENGLISH WEDDING IN CROATIA
In 2011, we arranged a wedding for an English couple, Suzi and Ray, with 90 guests from 13 countries. As Suzi and Ray have no links with Croatia – they simply came on holiday here, fell in love with the place and decided it was the perfect place for their wedding – they needed a lot of help creating the perfect celebration.
Working with them every step of the way, we arranged everything from the official documentation and church, to the photographer and band. Together, we visited a variety of venues and they chose to get married in Grožnjan's beautiful old church, with its magnificent views, and hold the reception in the nearby 5-star Kempinski Hotel.
Novigrad is very special to Suzi and Ray – it is where they came on holiday – so it's here they wanted their guests to stay, with some coming for only a few days and others for a whole week. To meet their varying needs and budgets, we arranged a mixture of accommodation in various hotels and apartments, and coaches to transfer everyone between the various venues. We were also on hand all week to help people with advice, activities and excursions.
With so many guests coming from different countries, Suzi and Ray wanted everyone to get a chance to meet and get to know each other before the wedding. So the day before, we arranged a welcome dinner in their hotel (Maestral Hotel) on a terrace overlooking the sea. Then, the day after the wedding, the celebrations were rounded off by a BBQ beach party.
While the event was held in Istria, this was a traditional English wedding and we found it fascinating: it was so different to a Croatian wedding! In Croatia, food, music and dancing are mixed together all night long, so having a formal dinner, followed by speeches and then music. The wedding also finished very early by our standards – at about 1:00 am. Croatian weddings usually run well into the small hours, if not the next day.
Every culture has its own way of doing things and one of the fun parts of our job is learning about these differences, and ensuring our clients get exactly what they want. This time, we're delighted to say, everyone had a great time and Suzi and Ray got their dream wedding.
